Lydia is a highly experienced Manx family Advocate whose practice encompasses the full range of family and children law, from divorce and complex financial proceedings to difficult disputes concerning children, care proceedings and international family cases.

Commissioned in 2011, Lydia has substantial experience appearing before the Isle of Man Courts at both first instance and appellate level.

Family proceedings often require a combination of technical legal knowledge, careful judgment and strong advocacy. Lydia brings all three.

Divorce & financial proceedings

Lydia advises and represents clients throughout divorce and separation, including the financial consequences that follow.

Her practice includes substantial and complex financial cases involving businesses, pensions, property, investments and other assets, as well as disputes concerning disclosure and the proper treatment of assets within the matrimonial proceedings.

Financial cases are not simply exercises in arithmetic.  The structure of the family’s finances, future needs, earning capacity and the practical consequences of any proposed settlement all matter.

Lydia’s role is to identify the issues that genuinely require resolution and ensure that the client understands both the legal position and the practical choices available.

Children

A substantial part of Lydia’s practice concerns children.

She represents parents and other family members in private law proceedings concerning where children live, the time they spend with each parent and significant decisions about their upbringing.

Her experience includes relocation, international children cases and Hague Convention proceedings, where jurisdiction and the need for prompt action can add considerable complexity.

These cases require robust representation without losing sight of the fact that the parties may need to continue parenting long after the litigation has ended.

Care & public law proceedings

Lydia has extensive experience of care and other public law children proceedings involving Social Services.

She acts in cases involving allegations of neglect or harm, expert evidence, assessments of parenting capacity and decisions capable of fundamentally changing the relationship between a child and their family.

These are among the most consequential proceedings the family courts determine.

They require careful preparation, sensitive client management and experienced advocacy.

Domestic abuse & protective proceedings

Lydia advises clients where domestic abuse is alleged and where protective orders or urgent court intervention may be required.

She also represents those responding to allegations.

The consequences can extend into children proceedings, occupation of the family home and wider family litigation, making it important that the issues are considered together rather than in isolation.

Advocacy & appeals

Your family lawyer can also be your advocate.  Courtroom advocacy has always been an important part of Lydia’s practice.

She regularly conducts contested family proceedings before the Isle of Man Courts and has experience of appellate litigation, including successful appeals before the Staff of Government Division.

As a Manx Advocate, Lydia can advise the client, develop the case, prepare the evidence and argue it in court.

That continuity is particularly valuable in family proceedings, where a detailed understanding of the history and evidence can be critical.

Resolution

Family litigation does not always need to end with a judge making the decision.

Lydia encourages negotiation and appropriate alternative dispute resolution where it offers a realistic route to resolving matters.  But resolution must be informed.

A client needs to understand what they are agreeing to, what the alternatives are and what is likely to happen if agreement cannot be reached.

She gives clients clear advice about what can realistically be achieved and focuses on the issues that matter rather than allowing the litigation itself to become the objective.

Where court proceedings are necessary, she is an experienced family Advocate accustomed to conducting difficult and highly contested cases.
